75%

The Indian Institutes of Technology have eased the eligibility criteria for admissions, opening their doors to students who have scored at least
  1. 75% in class XII, even if they are not among the top 20% performers of their boards,
  2. Provided they crack the entrance exam.
In other words, an aspirant, who has cracked the entrance test, should either figure in the
  1. top 20% performers of the Class XII Board examination or
  2. score at least 75%, to be eligible for admission to IITs.
In the case of SC/ST candidates, the cut-off will be 70% in board examination.

Retreat

http://www.iitmandi.ac.in/

One of the IITs, in Mandi, has flaunted its remoteness and turned it into an advantage. Mandi is situated in the Himalayan foothills. It has a scenic location and weather patterns quite different from the northern plains and the south, but has little by way of entertainment or other attractions. It is six hours from Chandigarh and an hour and a half from Kulu, the nearest airport.
To attract outstanding visiting faculty, IIT Mandi
  1. turned the usual semester season on its head.
  2. It works during the pleasant summer months and holidays during the cold winter.
  3. It sells itself as a retreat, somewhat like the California towns, and organises conferences where participants prefer to sit till the end.

"We sell ourselves as the only IIT in the Himalayas," says its director Timothy Gonsalves. With 600 students and 60 professors, IIT Mandi has a high student-faculty ratio. It also specialises in Himalayan science and technology, and new materials for electrical, electronic and medical applications.
Surprisingly, some Himalayan medicinal plants are useful for this application. Himalayan geology is another area of specialisation. Among other things, it also has a programme on next generation materials sponsored by Intel.IIT Mandi has thus been able to attract young faculty educated in top institutions in India and abroad.

family and peer pressure

IIT-Kanpur goes a step further and allows candidates to shift at the end of the first and second years. Not only does the institute allow students to also pursue a minor (pick 3 to 4 courses in another stream), it also has a scheme of a second major under which 10 courses for another stream can be chosen. At IIT-Kanpur, computer science, mechanical and electrical engineering, economics and math are the most popular branches that freshmen shift to.

"We have noticed that many students take up a stream due to family and peer pressure, but after they join they realize where their interests lay. All the schemes we have allow a perfect marriage between the student and the stream where his/her heart is. We are liberal because we see our undergraduate programme as the one that should broaden the mind," IIT-Kanpur dean (academic affairs) Dheeraj Sanghi said.

Switching streams

In the current system, because the entry is so competitive, there is a linear ranking of students based on their performance in the advanced JEE. Institutes and branches within those institutes are allotted based on the scores. Despite the norms, there are vacancies due to some students leaving. "To make use of this capacity and to allow students to find a better match to their interests, allow them to change branches in a limited manner based on their performance in the first year,"
